The police served meals to over 24,000 devotees waiting for their trains outside the Prayagraj Junction station after taking Makar Sankranti holy dip, on Tuesday night.
According to a Times of India report, a huge crowd of pilgrims had converged at the station and they were served food, water and tea till 3am on Wednesday.
The policemen got into the act of controlling them at static points and holding areas to regulate the surge.
In a heart-warming gesture, the cops also arranged quilts and blankets to save the devotees from the bone-chilling cold. The police department took the help of NGOs and local residents to arrange hi-tech machines to prepare food and serve it among pilgrims waiting outside the station.
On noticing that trains were arriving late because of thick fog, they held the passengers back on Leader Road and other streets leading to the railway station.
A large number of devotees and pilgrims had reached the wrong station but were guided by the police towards their designated railway stations, which ensured that none missed their trains.
ACP (Kotwali) Manoj Kumar Singh said, "We found many pilgrims hungry and thirsty and arranged meals with the help of NGOs. When a group of locals noticed this gesture, they too came forward and helped in serving tea and water to devotees."
DCP (city) Abhishek Bharti said, "Policemen worked with a sense of responsibility and respect towards pilgrims and took care of them as an example of service to mankind."
