Amid the ongoing tariff war with the US, China has reached out to India for better collaboration to embolden the Global South. In an article written in The Indian Express, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong wrote about the need for New Delhi to defy what he termed as Washington’s ‘bullying’.
He said that the US has weaponised tariffs, violated the norms set by the World Trade Organisation, disrupted global trade order in garb of ‘fairness’ and ‘reciprocity’. The diplomat said that the new trade policy adopted by US President Donald Trump seeks to “deprive” the developing world of their chance to progress by putting them permanently at the lower end of the global supply chain.
The Ambassor also took a swipe at all the nations involved in trade talks with the US. He said that there are nations that are attempting to secure preferential treatment by appeasing the US. The Chinese diplomat, however, added that accepting the “arbitrary” demands by the US will lead the world into the Great Depression or worst a “lawless jungle.”
In a message for India, the Ambassador listed out key economic indicators showing the growth potential of China and India. He said that with the Asian superpowers could engage in greater synergy for “1+1=11” multiplier effect. To conclude, the Ambassador said that it is time for the world to uphold the ethos of ‘US President Donald Trump had announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs at a snazzy ceremony in the Rose Garden of White House of April 2 earlier the month.
