External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Friday addressed the United Nation's 80th anniversary at Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan and "UN's decision-making does not reflect its membership or global priorities".

While addressing the event, Jaishankar said, "...All is not well with the United Nations. Its decision-making does not reflect its membership or global priorities. Debates are increasingly polarized, reforms are obstructed, and financial constraints are rising. Its response to terrorism exposes credibility gaps, and development in the Global South is slowing. Yet, on this notable anniversary, we must not abandon hope. Commitment to multilateralism must remain strong, however flawed. The UN must be supported, and our faith in international cooperation renewed. Meeting here today sends a message of unity and shared purpose."

"Even today, we are regrettably witnessing multiple conflicts. The Global South, in particular, has felt this pain. The 80th anniversary is a significant milestone. On this day, I reiterate India’s commitment to the ideals of peace and security, as well as development and prosperity. India will always be a strong votary of the UN as well as multilateralism," he added.

His remarks comes weeks after the current chair of the UN Human Rights Commission, Switzerland, urged New Delhi to take effective measures to protect the minorities and uphold the rights to the freedom of expression and the freedom of the media.

In its rebuttal, India had urged Switzerland to focus on addressing its own challenges, such as “racism, systematic discrimination and xenophobia" in its own society.
