A computer science teacher was shot dead on Wednesday night inside the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus in Uttar Pradesh, triggering shock and outrage.
The killing took place just hours after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath publicly highlighted what he described as an improved law-and-order situation in the state.
The victim, Danish Rao, had been associated with ABK High School on the AMU campus for the past 11 years. According to officials, Rao was taking an evening walk with two colleagues when the attack occurred around 8.50 pm near the university’s central library.
Two men riding a scooter intercepted the group and pointed pistols at them.
Moments before opening fire, one of the assailants allegedly addressed Rao, saying, “You don’t know me yet, now you will," reported NDTV. He was then shot at least three times, with two bullets hitting his head.
Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon later confirmed that both attackers fired at Rao before fleeing the scene. “Two unidentified men shot at him,” the officer said, adding that efforts were underway to trace the shooters.
Rao was immediately rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College for treatment, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Confirming the sequence of events, AMU Proctor Mohd Wasim Ali told reporters, “Around 9 pm, we received information that there had been a shooting near the library and that a man had been injured and was being taken for medical treatment. We learned the man who had been shot was Danish Rao and that he was a teacher at the ABK School. He was shot in the head… He died at the medical college.”
Police have formed six teams to investigate the case. CCTV footage from areas in and around the campus is being scanned to identify and track the attackers, who remain at large.
The incident came on the same day the Chief Minister addressed the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, asserting that law and order in the state had improved significantly.
“An atmosphere of security is essential for every person. Today, every person can say ‘investment is coming to UP because of the improved security environment’,” Adityanath said during his speech.
Further details in the case are awaited as the investigation continues.
