A Delhi-bound Air India flight (AI 162) faced an unusual delay on Sunday after a passenger who had been issued a boarding pass—and even marked as boarded, never actually entered the aircraft. The bizarre mix-up forced the plane, which had already started taxiing for departure from London’s Heathrow Airport, to return to the gate, according to a report by ANI.
The flight was already running about 45 minutes late before the situation unfolded. Once the crew realised that one passenger had not boarded, despite being cleared at the gate, standard security procedures kicked in.
Why the plane had to turn back
According to the ANI report citing an Air India spokesperson, the passenger mistakenly wandered into the arrivals area instead of the departure gate after having their boarding pass scanned. This meant the system recorded them as having boarded, even though they weren’t on the aircraft.
“As per standard security protocols, the aircraft returned to offload the passenger's baggage and subsequently departed with a delay. The passenger was detained by airport security officials for questioning,” the spokesperson told ANI.
Security rules leave no room for error
Aviation safety regulations require that if a passenger’s baggage is loaded onto an aircraft but the passenger fails to board, the baggage must be removed before takeoff. The reasoning is simple: unchecked baggage without the accompanying passenger poses a serious security risk.
Air India confirmed that its crew acted according to procedure, stressing that passenger safety and regulatory compliance were the priority, even if it meant further delaying the flight.
