Months after the success of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army has moved to strengthen its mobility in extreme terrain by placing an order for the BvS10 Sindhu, a specialised all-terrain armoured vehicle tailored for India's operational needs.
The BvS10 Sindhu is an India-specific, upgraded variant of BAE Systems Hägglunds' proven BvS10 platform. Built with an articulated twin-cab design, the vehicle is engineered to navigate high-altitude snow, deserts, marshlands and amphibious environments-terrains where conventional vehicles struggle. Its ability to maintain stability and mobility in harsh climatic conditions makes it a key addition to the Army's fleet.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and BAE Systems have jointly secured the contract to supply the vehicle. As per the agreement, L&T will manufacture the BvS10 Sindhu at its Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, backed by technical and design support from BAE Systems Hägglunds.
The order also includes an integrated logistics support package covering initial deployment, maintenance and life-cycle sustainment.
L&T said the programme will significantly boost the Army's strategic and tactical mobility while advancing India's defence manufacturing capabilities under Make in India. BAE Systems noted that the project underscores its commitment to local production and technology transfer.
“The BvS10’s unmatched mobility, flexibility, and performance in extreme climatic conditions are critical attributes highlighted by the Indian Army,” said Tommy Gustafsson Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds. “We are proud to support India’s defence modernisation through this licensing programme, which embodies our commitment to local manufacturing and technology transfer under the Make in India initiative.”
