Days after Delhi’s lieutenant governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena wrote a letter to former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, holding him and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) responsible for Delhi’s bad air quality and poor infrastructure, the party launched a poster attack at him, describing him as “Delhi ka Ghajini”.

AAP launches attack at LG

Reacting to LG’s letter, AAP launched a poster attack on social media platform X. In the poster, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party portrayed Saxena as ‘Ghajini’, suggesting that he was losing memory due to the pollution in national capital.

The party shared an edited poster featuring Saxena’s face morphed onto the body of the character from the Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini, a reference to the character’s short-term memory loss. The party accused Saxena of ignoring the fact that the BJP governs Delhi and is accountable for tackling pollution.

The caption read, “L – Low Quality; G – Ghajini,” while the altered image showed tattoos saying “Kejriwal is responsible”, “AQI at 750,” and carried the line: “Delhi’s LG has become Ghajini.”

Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated since the onset of winters, with the readings in many part of the capital entering into ‘severe’ category a number of days this month.

BJP responds

Reacting to the poster put up by AAP, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva told NDTV, "We are accountable for the current pollution crisis. But are we also accountable for the sins that were committed (by the AAP) in the last 12 years? Who is responsible for the air pollution crisis?"

"When LG Saxena talked about pollution, then CM Arvind Kejriwal would say that this (air pollution crisis) is an issue of 15-20 days, the media will raise it, some activists will go to court, and then this issue will be finished, and there is no need to work on it," he said, adding that the AAP chief is responsible for the deteriorating AQI in Delhi.

Saxena, in his letter, had also claimed that during a conversation with Kejriwal on air pollution, the former chief minister had down-played the issue, saying, it is an annual occurrence and activists and courts make an issue of it and then forget it.

The L-G said "11 years of neglect and criminal inaction" by Kejriwal and his government were responsible for Delhi's deteriorating air quality.

He alleged that during AAP's tenure, the government focused on blaming neighbouring states and the Centre, while failing to take concrete steps to control dust pollution, which Saxena said is a major contributor to PM10 and PM2.5 levels in the city.
