At least eight people were killed after a wall collapsed in Hari Nagar in the Jaitpur area of the national capital after heavy rainfall on Saturday morning.
"Seven people have died in the wall collapse incident in Harinagar, Jaitpur, including 3 men, 2 women and 2 girls," Delhi police had earlier said.
Police said that the incident took place close to an old temple where a lot of scrap dealers lived in slum huts. Eight residents were trapped after the wall suddenly collapsed following incessant rainfall in the area. All those injured were quickly rushed to the hospital ,but those in critical condition succumbed to their injuries.
“There is an old temple here, and next to it are old jhuggies where scrap dealers live. The wall collapsed due to heavy rain overnight. We have now evacuated these jhuggies so that no such incident occurs in future," Additional DCP (South East) Aishwarya Sharma said.
While an initial probe into the incident said that the incident was that of a building collapse, it was later confirmed that it was a "wall collapse". Reports have said that the area has been cleared and the residents have been relocated from vulnerable structures to safer spots.
After the national capital was lashed by heavy rainfall, authorities urged residents in low-lying and structurally unsafe areas to remain alert as the weather department has forecasted more heavy rain in the city.
