A 22-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay allegedly died by suicide in the wee hours of Saturday, after jumping from a hostel building in the Powai campus, Mumbai Police has stated.

The deceased, Rohit Sinha, a native of Delhi, was pursuing his studies in the science stream at IIT-Bombay. The incident occurred around 2:30 am, and police confirmed that he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

According to officials, a fellow student who was on the hostel terrace at the time reportedly witnessed the incident.

An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered at the Powai Police Station, and investigations are underway to determine the reason behind the suicide.

This tragic incident comes amid growing concern over student suicides in premier educational institutions.

Earlier this month, a fourth-year BTech student was found dead in his hostel room at IIT Kharagpur.

The rising number of such cases recently prompted the Supreme Court to issue 15 guidelines aimed at addressing mental health issues in educational institutions. The apex court had underscored the need to combat psychological distress, academic pressure, social stigma, and institutional apathy.
