The police on Friday detained two people suspected of creating a ruckus during Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's first public appearance since the attack on her a couple of days ago. The incident occured when the CM was attending an event called ‘Vastrika’ in Gandhi Nagar, the garment hub of New Delhi.

On 20 August, Gupta was attacked by Rajeshbhai Khimji, a 41-year-old man from Rajkot, during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ session at her camp office. The accused was arrested, and a case under various charges, including attempt to murder, was registered against him. Gupta stayed put at her official residence in Civil Lines since then.T

The chief minister is also likely to return to her office at the Delhi Secretariat today, PTI reported.

The Incident

The man reportedly handed over a paper to Gupta, and then shouted, slapped, pulled her hair and abused her before being overpowered by her security men.

The CRPF personnel reached the chief minister's residence on Thursday morning to take charge of her security from the Delhi Police. Once the arrangement is finalised, the Delhi Police will continue to manage the outer perimeter of the chief minister’s residence, while the CRPF will directly handle her personal and area-specific security, the CNN-News18 report added.

According to officials cited in the report, the area-specific security arrangements have been made to ensure round-the-clock protection for the Delhi CM.

In her first statement hours after the attack, Gupta responded by saying that it was a “cowardly attack” on the BJP-led government’s effort to serve the people of the national capital.

“The attack on me during this morning’s public hearing was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people,” the chief minister wrote in a post on X
