18 people lost their lives while several are injured after a fire broke out at a firecracker godown near Deesa town in Gujarat’s Banaskantha.

The toll is expected to rise as several injured have suffered severe burns. The godown, located on Dhunva Road near Deesa town, collapsed after the fire.

Emergency rescue teams, including district administration, and firefighters, were seen retrieving bodies from the debris. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Earlier, Banaskantha Collector Mihir Patel said that 13 bodies have been recovered while sharing details about the incident.

"The entire slab of the structure fell apart from the fire at the firecracker godown in Banaskantha. 13 bodies have been recovered from the site. As the debris from the site is being cleared, we are assessing the situation. 4 people have been injured, of which two have been referred to Civil Hospital in Deesa and two others to the Palampur Civil hospital," he said.

The Collector said that they received information early, around 9.45 am, that an explosion had taken place at the firecracker godown, due to which the entire structure fell apart.
