IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and senior officials on September 1 held a meeting with online gaming industry representatives to discuss the implications of the newly enacted online gaming law, government sources told Moneycontrol.
The discussions focused on the government’s push to promote e-sports and online social games, which remain outside the scope of the ban on real-money gaming. Officials also underlined the importance of an orderly transition for companies affected by the law and measures to safeguard users’ money during this shift.
According to sources, industry representatives informed the government that steps were already being taken to ensure compliance with the Act. These include winding down real-money gaming operations and working with payment intermediaries to prevent violations.
The meeting comes just days after the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was cleared by Parliament and received presidential assent in what was one of the swiftest legislative moves in recent memory. The law bans online real-money games while creating a central authority to regulate permissible formats such as e-sports.
