The Congress on Saturday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over repeated claims by former US President Donald Trump that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. The opposition party said Trump had made the claim 13 times in just over a month, using it to highlight his diplomatic achievements.

“Today President Trump turns 79. In the 34 days between May 10, 2025, and June 13, 2025, he trumpeted publicly on 13 different occasions in 3 different countries that he had brought about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using trade with America as a carrot and stick,” said Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on X.

“He (Trump), of course, showered praise on both countries in equal measure,” Ramesh added. “@narendramodi when will you speak up,” he asked in the same post.

The Congress leader also shared a list of Trump’s remarks and corresponding media reports to back his claim, along with a video clip in which Trump says, “I stopped a war between India and Pakistan” and that he did it “with trade.”

Ramesh criticised the Prime Minister for maintaining silence even as Trump continues to make his assertions “for the nth time,” including most recently during an event at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

“As India is engulfed in grief over the Ahmedabad aircraft tragedy, President Trump continues to make his claims on India and Pakistan for the nth time,” Ramesh wrote.

Tensions between India and Pakistan had escalated after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. India responded with precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. In retaliation, Pakistan attempted strikes on Indian military installations over the next three days. Military actions on both sides were halted following a May 10 understanding between the director generals of military operations (DGMOs).

While Trump has claimed credit for brokering peace, the Indian government has maintained that the ceasefire understanding was the result of direct military-level talks between the two nations.

Earlier this week, Congress said India had suffered “three huge diplomatic setbacks” at the hands of the US and accused the Modi government of allowing foreign policy to be dictated by domestic political goals.

Ramesh pointed to recent US statements and actions that he said “were both a challenge and a warning.” These included US Army General Michael Kurilla referring to Pakistan as a “phenomenal partner” in counterterrorism, the reported visit of Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir to Washington, and remarks from a Trump administration spokesperson.

“The Prime Minister continues to be silent on these claims,” Ramesh said, adding that Modi should set aside his “stubbornness” and convene an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament.
