Vodafone Idea has confirmed that it is in "exploratory" talks with Elon Musk's Starlink and various other satcom providers. This comes after the exchanges sought a clarification from the telecom operator after Moneycontrol exclusively reported the development.
In an exchange filing released on March 19, Vodafone Idea said that it keeps on exploring various initiatives and tie-ups with several parties to improve its service quality and expand its telecom services. This falls under its regular course of business.
Vodafone Idea's Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Jagbir Singh had confirmed that the company is in talks with Starlink during an interaction with Moneycontrol. "We are in discussions with not only Starlink, but two-three others as well. We will see where it goes, depending on our strategy," he said.
Singh further said that the company is currently in talks to find out who would be its right partner for further expansion.
His comments came days after the company's rivals, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, partnered with SpaceX to bring Starlink's high-speed satellite internet service to India.
The shares of the company saw significant gains on March 19, closing nearly 5 percent higher at Rs 7.45 apiece. After the exchanges sought a clarification from the company following the report and its possible affect on the rise in the share price, Vodafone Idea issued the clarification.
The company also noted that its announcement of the rollout of its 5G services in Mumbai may have also affected the share price. It had announced in an exchange filing that its 5G services in the city will be available from today, backed by its competitive spectrum holding and investment in next-generation infrastructure.
