Mehli Mistry's exit from the Tata Trusts marks a significant shift within one of India's most influential philanthropic networks.
The low-profile businessman and long-time associate of Ratan Tata was reportedly voted out as trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust - the two key entities that together hold a majority stake in Tata Sons.
His reappointment was opposed by trustees Noel Tata, Vijay Singh, and Venkat Srinivasan, signalling the end of his tenure and influence within the Trusts.
For decades, Mistry had remained a discreet but trusted presence in the Tata ecosystem. A Times of India report says that the 66-year-old businessman, who leads the MPallonji Group (unrelated to the Shapoorji Pallonji Group), was among the select few considered part of Ratan Tata's inner circle.
A resident of Colaba, Mistry once lived in the same complex as Tata and was known for his quiet but steadfast support of the former Tata Sons chairman, the TOI report further says.
Born into a prominent Parsi business family, Mistry is the son of Pallon Mistry, younger brother of construction magnate Pallonji Mistry. His association with Ratan Tata stretched back several decades, built on shared heritage, mutual respect, and business ties within Mumbai's Parsi community.
Appointed as trustee in late 2022, Mistry's inclusion on the Trusts' board was viewed as an effort to ensure continuity of Tata Sons' leadership after Ratan Tata. At the time, he described himself as deeply loyal to Tata, once saying, "I do whatever he wants me to do. I have to secure his interests at all times."
Mistry's relationship with Noel Tata, Ratan Tata's half-brother, was once cordial. He had also served as an advisor on the board of Trent, the group's retail arm.
However, over the past year, differences within the Tata Trusts began to surface. Following Ratan Tata's passing in October 2024, internal dynamics shifted, with Mistry's influence facing increasing resistance.
Known for his understated style and sharp understanding of both business and philanthropy, Mehli Mistry leaves behind a legacy of loyalty to Ratan Tata and years of service within the Trusts' leadership. His departure underscores the evolving balance of power within the Tata Trusts as it charts a course for the post-Ratan Tata era.
