Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal opened up about his deep dissatisfaction after exiting the e-commerce giant, calling it “unfinished business.”
Speaking at Startup Mahakumbh, Bansal recalled a conversation with Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who bluntly told him, “You are the most unhappy billionaire I’ve ever seen, for someone who has had a billion-dollar exit.”
Bansal admitted that his exit from Flipkart in 2018, following the company’s $16 billion acquisition by Walmart, was neither anticipated nor desired.
“I think I was extremely unhappy after the exit because it was not something I had planned. It just happened,” he said.
Reflecting on what he considers unfinished business, Bansal explained that his vision for Flipkart extended far beyond where it was at the time of his exit.
“The goal was to take the platform that I had created—or helped create—to a billion people eventually. To serve a billion people at large scale, even globally, over time,” he said.
Since moving on from Flipkart, Bansal has ventured into the fintech space with Navi, a company focused on digital lending and financial services. While this new journey is different, the desire to build something impactful at scale remains. “That’s the kind of unfinished business that I still pursue,” he said.
