The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), representing major digital platforms including Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, Uber, and Rapido, has sought a two-month extension from the Karnataka government to submit details of their vehicle fleets.

The request follows a recent Karnataka High Court order that directed the suspension of bike taxi operations by mid-May and ordered the state government to draft a regulatory framework for bike taxi services.

In a letter to NV Prasad, secretary of the department of transport, IAMAI stressed the need for industry consultation in framing the policy. The association highlighted the growing need for bike taxis in urban transportation and their role in supporting livelihoods of gig workers.

“Bike taxis have become an integral part of the public transportation ecosystem,” IAMAI said, adding lakhs of rides were ordered in Bengaluru alone. The service offer a cost-effective commuting option in congested cities and provide income opportunities to thousands of riders.

IAMAI urged the government to form a joint committee comprising transport department officials,  industry representatives, and gig worker or bike taxi unions. The committee would help shape balanced and inclusive guidelines.

The association also asked the government to consider issuing temporary permits to aggregators who comply with safety norms, allowing them to continue operations as the policy is finalised.

IAMAI reiterated its willingness to collaborate with the government in developing a regulatory framework that is “balanced, equitable, and sustainable”, ensuring both public welfare and economic opportunity.

The Karnataka government has not yet responded to the request. The policy is expected to have a significant impact on bike taxi operators and the gig economy in the state.
