A Samsung spokesperson said employee welfare remains a top priority for them and that a mutual agreement has been reached to enhance wages and benefits for the next three years.
"At Samsung, employee welfare remains a top priority. We have constructively engaged with all our workers at the Chennai plant and are delighted to announce a mutual agreement to enhance wages and benefits for the next three years. This collaborative approach reflects our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our workers and fostering a stable, harmonious, and forward-looking work environment," the spokesperson said.
Earlier this year, around 500 workers at Samsung’s manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, are staged a sit-in protest following the suspension of three employees, Reuters reported citing sources.
This was the second major labor dispute at the plant in less than six months. The facility, which manufactures refrigerators, televisions, and washing machines, contributed to a fifth of Samsung’s $12 billion sales in India for 2022-23 and employs approximately 1,800 workers.
The protest followed a similar labor action last year when workers at the plant went on a five-week strike demanding higher wages and union recognition. That strike ended in October after Samsung agreed to address their concerns.
