Big UPI Rule Changes from August 1: Daily Limits, Balance Checks & Autopay Timing Tweaked

Big UPI rule changes have kicked in from August 1, 2025. From daily limits on balance checks to fixed timings for autopayments, NPCI’s new rules aim to ease system load and streamline your digital payment experience. Here's what every PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm user must know.

August 1, 2025 saw new rules published by the National Payments Corporation of India come into effect

August 1, 2025 saw new rules published by the National Payments Corporation of India come into effect to try and make digital payments easier and cut down on system congestions. This translates to your UPI experience receiving a significant upgrade from today. If you use PhonePe, GooglePay, Paytm or any other UPI app, these changes will have a direct effect on your everyday transaction.

Here's all you need to know about the new UPI Rules1. Bank Balance Check Now Restricted to 50 Times a Day

Since August 1, you cannot check your bank balance unlimited times through UPI apps. The NPCI has introduced daily limit of 50 balance checks to minimize server burden.

2. Balance Display After Each Transaction Now Compulsory

To offset the new balance-check cap, your bank balance will now be auto-shown after every UPI transaction, ensuring you stay informed without needing to check manually.

3. Autopayments Moved to Non-Peak Hours

In another change, the scheduled bill payments via the UPI will now be processed only before 10am or after 9:30 pm. This applies to recurring payments like OTT subscriptions, EMIs, and utility bills to avoid peak-hour congestion.

4. Only 3 Times You Can Check Pending Transaction Status

If a UPI transaction has got stuck, you will be able to check the status only three times now, with a 90-second difference between every check. This is meant to ease network pressure.

5. GPay, PhonePe, Paytm Have to Implement All New Rules

Users will not be able to circumvent the new limits no matter which platform--that is, all UPI apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm will have to abide by these new NPCI guidelines.

6. No Daily UPI Transaction Limit Increased

The 20 transactions a day and ₹1 lakh per day transfer limit is unaltered in the new guidelines. You can still use UPI normally within this limit.

7. New Users Have Lower Transfer Limits

For first-time UPI users, banks will still have lower limits of ₹5,000 per transaction and ₹5,000 per day for the initial 24 hours after registration.
