The latest mutual fund data indicates selective activity in equity investments, with buying and selling concentrated in a limited set of stocks. Out of over 4,000 listed companies on the BSE, mutual funds held positions in approximately 1,200 stocks as of June. However, significant investments were focused on a few.
Only 16 stocks witnessed mutual fund inflows between Rs 1,000-10,000 crore during the month, while another 21 stocks saw inflows in the range of Rs 500 crore to Rs 1,000 crore. The remaining stocks attracted more modest investments between Rs 1 crore and Rs 500 crore.
On the sell side, nine stocks recorded mutual fund outflows of over Rs 1,000 crore. An additional 16 stocks saw selling between Rs 500 crore and Rs 1,000 crore, while the rest—over 400 stocks—experienced mutual fund exits ranging between Rs 1 crore and Rs 500 crore.
Among the most notable purchases, Asian Paints stood out, with mutual funds investing over Rs 10,000 crore following a block deal in which Reliance Industries divested its stake. Similarly, Vishal Mega Mart attracted Rs 7,865 crore in mutual fund investments after its promoter offloaded shares via a block deal.
Other significant buys included Bajaj Finserv, Dixon Technologies, NTPC, Biocon, State Bank of India, Trent, Kaynes Technology, and Siemens Energy India, each receiving inflows between Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 4,750 crore. Swiggy, Aditya Birla Capital, Sai Life Sciences, Mahindra & Mahindra, Alkem Laboratories, and Premier Energies also saw mutual fund investments exceeding Rs 1,000 crore each.
On the selling front, ICICI Bank topped the list with mutual fund outflows of Rs 1,653 crore, followed by Infosys and Reliance Industries, which saw sell-offs worth Rs 1,500 crore and Rs 1,492 crore, respectively. Tata Motors, Coal India, IndusInd Bank, and Bharti Airtel also witnessed mutual fund selling of over Rs 1,000 crore each.
