Leading car maker Maruti Suzuki has expanded the manufacturing capability at its Manesar plant in Haryana bt 1 lakh units per year, the company informed stock exchanges on April 9. With the addition, the total manufacturing capability at Manesar now stands at 9 lakh vehicles per year.
"We aim to nearly double our capacity to 4 million vehicles per annum over the next 7-8 years, and this capacity addition of 100,000 vehicles per year is a step towards this goal. It will help us serve our customers faster and enhance our overall capability to manufacture up to 23.5 lakh units per annum, Hisashi Takeuchi, the MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India said in the press release.
This new assembly line has been added to the existing plant-A at the Manesar unit, which has significantly contributed to Maruti's total production. The car maker produces eight models at the Manesar plant, including some of its top-selling ones like the Wagon R hatchback and Brezza SUV.
Maruti has plans to hasten its EV capabilities and introduce its first electric car by the end of the year, a race in which major rivals Tata Motors and M&M have an edge in terms of models out in the market in India's young electric mobility segment. Earlier in January, the company also announced plans for a new plant in Gujarat, which it said could be operational by 2029.
Starting April, Maruti Suzuki had also effected a rejig of its top management, inducting Shashank Srivastava to the executive committee.
