US markets opened lower for a third-straight session on Wednesday, April 2. This comes amidst investor anxiety on President Donald Trump’s announcements on reciprocal tariffs today. At open, the S&P 500 fell 1 percent, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.4 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also fell 0.7 percent.
The White House has announced that US President Donald Trump will reveal his reciprocal tariffs during an event in the White House Rose Garden. “The president will be announcing a tariff plan that will roll back the unfair trade practices that have been ripping off our country for decades,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said according to a report by Bloomberg.
Amongst early losers, electric vehicle company Tesla shares fell nearly 4 percent after it was reported that the company had missed estimates for vehicle deliveries.
As of 7:35 pm IST, the gainers on the S&P 500 Index were Doordash Inc, Ceasers Entertainment and United Airlines, While decliners included Mosaic Co, Amcor PLC, Progressive Corp.
Asian markets mixed
On the other hand, Asian markets were mixed on Wednesday. Japan's Nikkei closed around 0.28% higher at 35,725.87 whileSouth Korea's Kospi fell 0.62 percent to close at 2,505.86.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index also traded flat to close at 23,205.15 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 traded 0.12% higher to close at 7,934.5.
Indian benchmark indices on the other hand erased some of the previous session losses. At close, the Sensex was up 592.93 points or 0.78 percent at 76,617.44, and the Nifty was up 166.65 points or 0.72 percent at 23,332.35.
