Looking ahead, the market will closely watch corporate earnings. Investors will closely analyze earnings from Home Depot on Tuesday and Lowe’s on Wednesday to gauge consumer strength.
The top gainers on S&P 500 were Berkshire Hathaway Inc, Nike Inc, Travelers Companies Inc, Estee Lauder Companies Inc, and others.
Among the top losers on S&P 500 were Palantir Technologies, Constellation Energy Corp, Lamb Weston Holdings Inc, Arista Networks Inc, and others.
Warren Buffett’s, Berkshire Hathaway's Class A shares jump nearly 4 percent after posting strong earnings. The company reported a 71 percent rise in operating profit to $14.5 billion in the fourth quarter, driven by a huge 302 percent increase in insurance underwriting.
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, fell more than 1 percent, marking its fifth straight day of losses. Over the past five sessions, Meta has dropped about 10 percent.
Palantir’s stock dropped 8.7 percent on Monday. The stock, which has been popular with retail investors, has fallen more than 24 percent over the past five sessions. The stock has been on a downhill after the company disclosed a new stock sale plan from CEO Alex Karp.
