The Centre on February 27 appointed Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) chief. He will replace Madhabi Puri Buch whose terms ends on Februry 28.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue, to the post of SEBI chairman, according to a government order issued late in the evening.
Here's all you need to know about the new Sebi chief -A 1987-batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre, Pandey took over as the Finance Secretary in September 2024 after TV Somanathan's promotion to Cabinet Secretary. He holds a Masters in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK).
He held the position of the secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) before assuming the role of Finance Secretary. Before joining DIPAM in 2019, Pandey was the principal secretary in the Odisha government.
Before serving as Secretary in the DIPAM, the bureaucrat held many significant positions in Union government as well as the Government of Odisha.
Tuhin Kanta Pandey is credited with successfully completing the long-pending sale of the national carrier Air India and for overseeing the listing of the national insurer, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
In his distinguished career in the Union Government, Pandey held several positions including that of Joint Secretary, Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), Joint Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat and Deputy Secretary in Ministry of Commerce.
In State Government of Odisha, Pandey also served as administrative head in the Departments of Health, General Administration, Commercial Taxes, Transport and Finance. He also served as Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation and Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
