Benchmark indices ended in the red, unable to sustain the mid-day recovery following a weak start, with Nifty 50 closing below the 24,800 level as markets assessed the broader impact of Trump's tariff and penalty.
The last-hour selling came on monthly expiry, dragging the Nifty 50 lower. At close, the Sensex was down 296.28 points or 0.36 percent at 81,185.58, and the Nifty was down 86.70 points or 0.35 percent at 24,768.35. For the month of July, Sensex and Nifty lost nearly 3 percent each.
The BSE Mid and Smallcap indices shed 0.7 percent each, underperforming the main indices.

Microsoft shares rose 3.5% after it posted a strong earnings report and briefly surpassed the $4 trillion market cap threshold, becoming only the second publicly traded company to ever touch the milestone after Nvidia.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 330.30 points, or 0.74%, to 44,130.98, the S&P 500 lost 23.51 points, or 0.37%, to 6,339.39 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 7.23 points, or 0.03%, to 21,122.45.
US Bond Yield (Down)
The yield on 10-year Treasuries and 2-year Treasuries were trading marginally lower ay 4.37 percent and 3.95 percent in the early trade on Friday.
Dollar Index (Up)
The dollar headed for its best week in almost three years against its major peers, maintaining momentum on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump set new tariff rates on dozens of trade partners.
Asian currencies (Down)
Asian currencies were trading lower in the early trade on Friday with with South Korean Won leading the losers followed by Philippines Peso, Indonesian Rupiah, Taiwan Dollar, China Renminbi.
Crude (Flat)
Oil prices were little changed on Friday after falling more than 1% in the previous session as traders digested the impact of new higher U.S. tariffs that may curtail economic activity and lower global fuel demand growth.
Gold (Flat)
Gold held an advance — but remained on track for a weekly loss — as the White House unveiled President Donald Trump’s tariff rates on trading partners that are set to take effect on Friday.
Fund Flow Action
The Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling on 9th consecutive session on July 31 as they sold equities worth Rs 5588 crore. On the other hand, Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) extended their buying on 19th day as they purchased equities worth Rs 6372 crore on the same day.
