RBI likely to hike rates further: Jim Walker

Jim Walker, Managing Director at Asianomics said that emerging markets have been experiencing strong headwinds and will see a difficult time in 2011 with food inflation and rate hikes continuing to be a major cause for concern.

Despite the unrest and turmoil in Egypt, the US markets sharply higher hitting multi-year highs on Tuesday. However, an unstoppable sell-off for the fifth consecutive session dragged the Indian equity benchmarks to five-month lows on Tuesday.

Talking about the road ahead for emerging markets, Jim Walker managing director of Asianomics tells CNBC-TV18, that the indices here have been experiencing strong headwinds in 2011. "This year will be difficult for emerging markets, with food inflation and rate hikes continuing to be a major cause for concern," he states. He expects the Reserve Bank to hike interest rates further this year. Walker also expects Europe to experience a slowdown in its growth path in 2011-12. Below is a verbatim transcript of Jim Walker
