Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of India reopened a property dispute between Iskcon Mumbai and Iskcon Bengaluru over the ownership of the iconic Hare Krishna Hill in Bengaluru. At the heart of the dispute is a property occupying 7 acres in the heart of Bengaluru where the land value is a few hundred crore. Moneycontrol explains what this dispute would mean for Bengaluru temple and how it will impact other religious trusts using similar structures.
What is the case about?
The dispute between the two Iskcon’s dates back 25 years and it started as a civil case in Bengaluru district court. At the heart of the dispute is whether Iskcon Bengaluru is an independent entity or it falls under the larger Iskcon umbrella controlled by Iskcon Mumbai. Iskcon Mumbai is taking a stance that it is the headquarters while Iskcon Bengaluru being a branch office and hence Bengaluru temple will be owned by Iskcon Mumbai. Iskcon Bengaluru is of the view that it is an independent society registered in Karnataka and it owns the temple.
What is the recent development?
The Supreme Court had reopened the case on December 2 and the arguments from both sides will be heard before taking a call. The case is posted for hearing on January 22,2026. In May 2025 the Supreme Court had rendered its initial verdict in the Iskcon matter upholding the independence of Bengaluru Iskcon over Iskcon Mumbai. The case has witnessed seesaw movement over the years starting with Iskcon Bengaluru winning at the trial court in 2009. However, Iskcon Mumbai challenged this order and won the case in Karnataka High Court in 2011. Iskcon Bengaluru appealed this case in Supreme Court in 2011. On May 16,2025 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Iskcon Bengaluru.
What are implications of the case on Iskcon?
The temple facing the property dispute is located in Rajajinagar, at the heart of Bengaluru. The property value of the land could be run into hundreds of crores, say real estate experts. The case will also have implications on the theological differences between Bengaluru and Mumbai arms of Iskcon on the differences between Ritvik system vs Guru System.
What are the broader implications of this case?
The Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Iskcon case would also act as a precedent in future trust dispute cases involving some of the large charities and religious organizations. Some of the older not-for profit trusts follow decentralized model, say market participants, wherein the regional chapters form separate trusts and own properties like temples and charitable institutions. A supreme court verdict in favor of Isckon Mumbai would imply the ownership of assets is centralized.
