US President Donald Trump has struck a deal with Indonesia. While an official statement from Jakarta is awaited, Trump took to Truth Social to announce the business agreement with Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
One of the key aspects of the trade deal – sale of 50 Boeing jets. In his very long post on the social media platform that he owns, Trump said that “Indonesia has committed to purchasing 50 Boeing jets, many of them 777’s.”
There is no clarity on the timeline of the tariff deal and more importantly, Indonesia has not agreed to the revise levies – not on paper. Indonesia will now face 19 percent tariffs. Earlier, the country was threatened with 32 percent levy.
Boeing stocks witnessed a spike after Trump’s announcement. The aircraft giant ahs been facing troubles in wake of Trump tariffs. While Indonesia deal may prove to be a brief respite, a bigger challenge in awaiting it. There are reports that the European Union is preparing a list of sectors and entities that will be impacted as part of its retaliation plan against Trump. This list also includes Boeing.
As per a Bloomberg report, new list prepared by the EU officials includes more than €65 billions of industrial goods. Aircraft (nearly €11 billion) are the key American product in the list. Others include alcoholic drinks (€1.2 billion), cars (nearly €8 billion) machinery (more than €9.4 billion) agrifood products, mostly fruits and vegetables (nearly €2 billion).
