OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon on Wednesday while lauding India’s vision on artificial intelligence, called it one of the few countries demonstrating the scale and ambition needed to lead in the AI era.

Speaking at the launch of the OpenAI Academy in India, Kwon said the partnership between OpenAI and the Indian government is aimed at expanding AI education and skilling to support India’s rile in the global AI landscape.

“India is becoming a global AI powerhouse,” Kwon said, while pointing out that the country has the second-highest number of ChatGPT users along with a thriving developer community.

The OpenAI Academy, launched in collaboration with IndiaAI, an initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)—will aim to equip students, civil servants, non-profit leaders, and developers with new AI knowledge.

“In the brief time I’ve spent in India, it’s clear that the country’s leadership understands that maximising AI’s benefits requires significant investments in two areas: core infrastructure and cultivated data,” Kwon said.

The OpenAI executive also thanked Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for his support, delivered via a video message during the event, and commended the collaborative spirit shown by officials from MeitY.

Kwon added that the demand for AI professionals is expected to grow exponentially, and the OpenAI Academy will help bridge the skills gap by making AI learning more accessible. “We hope to accelerate AI learning, sharing knowledge and how to leverage the latest AI tools so people in India can stay at the cutting edge,” he said.

The launch of the OpenAI Academy follows Kwon’s multi-country trip meeting with global policymakers on AI regulation and deployment.

“By empowering people to harness frontier intelligence, India can accelerate development and discover scientific breakthroughs,” he said.
