FIIs turn buyers in auto, telecom, IT in second half of June; selling continues in power, FMCG

Foreign investors reverse course in late June, pouring money into growth sectors like auto, telecom, and IT, while continuing to offload power, FMCG, and consumer durables.

Foreign investors reversed their stance in the second half of June, turning net buyers in the automobile, telecom, information technology, and consumer goods sectors after being net sellers in these segments during the first half of the month. Their buying momentum also continued in oil & gas, financial services, chemicals, and realty stocks.

According to NSDL data, FIIs made net purchases of over Rs 5,020 crore in auto stocks during the second half of June, after net selling of Rs 296 crore in the first half. In telecom stocks, they bought shares worth Rs 3,620 crore after selling Rs 887 crore earlier. Similarly, their investments in IT and consumer services stood at over Rs 2,800 crore each in the latter half, recovering from selling of Rs 1,700 crore and Rs 1,460 crore, respectively, in the first half.

FIIs remained bullish on oil & gas stocks, investing Rs 4,938 crore in the second half after buying Rs 1,199 crore in the first. In the financial services and chemical sectors, they picked up shares worth Rs 4,261 crore and Rs 987 crore, respectively, following earlier buying of Rs 4,685 crore and Rs 1,405 crore. Realty, construction, and metals also attracted FII interest, with inflows of Rs 910 crore, Rs 842 crore, and Rs 201 crore, respectively.

On the other hand, FIIs continued to exit power, consumer durables, and FMCG stocks. They sold over Rs 3,191 crore in power during the second half, after selling Rs 3,120 crore in the first. In consumer durables and FMCG, they booked selling worth Rs 600 crore and Rs 359 crore, following significant selling of Rs 1,893 crore and Rs 3,626 crore, respectively, in the earlier half.

Additionally, in the first half of June, FIIs offloaded capital goods worth Rs 3,022 crore and healthcare stocks worth Rs 442 crore.
