After a portion of the canopy at the departure area of Delhi airport's T1 collapsed on Friday morning, airlines IndiGo, SpiceJet, among others, announced the suspension of flight operations from the terminal.
One person was killed and six were injured in the incident which took place following heavy rains in the city.
"Due to the unforeseen situation at T1 this morning, all flights from Delhi airport T1 have been cancelled until 0000 hrs, June 29. Further, flights due to arrive at T1, will now arrive either at T2 or T3 in Delhi," IndiGo said in a post on X.
Similarly, SpiceJet announced that all affected flights departing from Terminal 1 are being re-accommodated to Terminal 3. "Due to heavy traffic congestion enroute Delhi Airport, all passengers are requested to ensure sufficient travel time and keep a check on their flight status," it said.
The incident happened around 5 am at the departure area of Terminal 1 (T1) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid heavy rains in the national capital.
India's minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, said that he has personally inspected the site and ensured a "thorough examination of the terminal's structure" to be conducted by experts to ensure safety.
"We are committed to providing compensation to the family of the deceased and to those injured," he said.
The airport -- which has three terminals T1, T2 and T3 -- handles around 1,400 flight movements daily.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a consortium led by GMR Group, is the operator of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital.
"We sincerely regret this disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused." the spokesperson said.
