Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said Mumbai is the safest city in India, as his government has come under fire from the opposition, which has questioned the law and order situation after actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his Bandra home.

Speaking to Moneycontrol on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Fadnavis said, “Even if one incident happens, it is serious, and we take it seriously. That said, when comparing metropolitan cities across India, Mumbai is the safest.”

“It is a city where a woman can travel alone at midnight and feel secure, and it has the highest number of employed women, reflecting its safety. While a few incidents have occurred, which should not have, it would be incorrect to label Mumbai as unsafe based on them. Mumbai remains the safest city.”

Opposition leaders, including Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, have slammed the state government for its failure to curb crime and maintain law and order.

The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Maharashtra securing a huge win in the assembly elections held in November.
