Budget 2025 Expectations Live: Focus on accelerating state government spending, says Amitabh Chaudhry on budget expectations

Speaking to Moneycontrol at World Economic Forum on budget priorities, Amitabh Chaudhry, CEO of Axis Bank, says "I am quite sure that the government will maintain their fiscal prudence. I will expect the budget deficit to be brought down to below 4.5% as promised by the Finance Minister earlier. But they can see, they had also put a lot of conditions around the contribution of central government to state government around what state governments need to do before centrally give them the money. I am sure they will look at some of those things and see how they can spur the state government to spend their share quickly, faster, so that growth can be supported. Let's also understand that this growth we have, 6.5%, 7%, whatever the number is, also means that there is more money at the hands of government to spend. It's not that money is shrinking. It is growing but maybe at a slightly lesser pace."

Davos 2025 Live: Any country that invests in its AI system will have a geopolitical advantage, says Yoshua Bengio

Speaking to Moneycontrol at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bengio said, "The countries that have their own AI systems, are likely to have a geo-political advantage in the future. So, we are seeing more and more countries willing to invest in their own autonomous systems."

Davos 2025 Live: Krishna Kumar on agri stack and need for the government to speed up processes

Krishna Kumar, co-founder and CEO of Cropin, at the World Economic Forum discussed the need for the government to speed up processes of agri stack. “Agriculture starts from land ownership. Once you digitize the farmer, and land ownership, you can build a lot of businesses on top of it…For instance, if a grower wants a loan, a bank needs to underwrite. (For this) the bank needs more data and risk analysis needs to be done. Same for insurance products, or a marketplace. A lot will be built on it (agri stack). So think of it like the internet. Once you have an agri stack, you will see a lot of solutions and products getting built on top of it", said Kumar. “The government is doing their bit and they are on the right track. One of our requests is to expedite this. It’s faster than before, but still quite slow from our lens. We want to see that translating much faster. It definitely has a lot of value. Because once you create digital infrastructure for agriculture or otherwise, it accelerates growth. We have seen this happen with payments as well", he added

Richest 10 percent got over half of what UK extracted from India during colonialism: Oxfam study

The UK extracted USD 64.82 trillion from India over a century of colonialism between 1765 and 1900 and USD 33.8 trillion of this went to the richest 10 per cent -- enough money to carpet London in notes of 50 British pound almost four times over.

This forms part of rights group Oxfam International's latest flagship global inequity report released every year on the first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

"Legacies of inequality and pathologies of plunder, pioneered during the time of historical colonialism, continue to shape modern lives. This has created a deeply unequal world, a world torn apart by division based on racism, a world that continues to systematically extract wealth from the Global South to primarily benefit the richest people in the Global North," Oxfam said. Davos 2025 Live: Billionaires' wealth soared in 2024, anti-poverty group says as the elites prepare for another Davos

Billionaires' wealth grew three times faster in 2024 than the year before, a top anti-poverty group reported on Monday as some of the world's political and financial elite prepared for an annual gathering in Davos, Switzerland.

Oxfam International, in its latest assessment of global inequality timed to the opening of the World Economic Forum meeting, also predicts at least five trillionaires will crop up over the next decade. A year ago, the group forecast that only one trillionaire would appear during that time.

OxFam's research adds weight to a warning by outgoing President Joe Biden last week of a “dangerous concentration of power in the hands of very few ultra-wealthy people.” The group's sharp-edged report, titled “Takers Not Makers,” also says the number of people in poverty has barely budged since 1990. Davos 2025 Live: All about World Economic Forum in Davos

In 1971, Professor Klaus Schwab founded the World Economic Forum as a not-for-profit foundation under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Government to promote stakeholder capitalism. He chose Davos as the home for the annual meeting for the escape from the every day that the mountains represent in Swiss and German culture.

Initially, the forum focused on how European firms could catch up with US management practices. But by 1973, global events like the Arab-Israeli War and the collapse of the Bretton Woods fixed exchange rate mechanism led to the annual gathering expanding its focus from management to economic and social issues.

In 1975, the forum introduced a membership system for 'the 1,000 leading companies of the world'. Since then, every year, Davos brings together some 3,000 participants (including paying members and selected invitees), among whom are investors, business leaders, political leaders, economists, celebrities and journalists, for a five-day summit that discusses global issues.

Per the forum's official site, over the last fifty years, Davos has addressed the key events of world history, from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of economic globalization and runaway climate change. It also contributed to averting a war between Greece and Türkiye, built economic bridges around the world, and gave a platform to leading environmentalists among other things.

Davos 2025 Live: Donald Trump looms over World Economic Forum even as top Indian business leaders give Davos a miss

The start of the 55th annual World Economic Forum on January 20th coincides with Donald Trump’s return to the White House for a second term as US President. As the World Economic Forum in Davos continues to champion global cooperation, it faces a stark contrast with Donald Trump's "America First" ideology. A sharp shift from the globalisation agenda that defined Davos.

Trump's virtual address on Thursday, January 23rd is one of the Forum's most anticipated sessions this year. This marks his third appearance at this gathering in recent years, with WEF President Borge Brende stating that Trump will not only deliver a speech but also interact with delegates.

While America dominates discourse at the forum- with at least three sessions focussed on the US Presidency, economy and dollar, India’s corporate presence at Davos this year appears subdued. Read more
