Tata Electronics is planning to buy a fabrication or outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) plant in Malaysia in order to improve its knowledge and talent base before entering the chip assembly and packing business in India, a report by The Economic Times said.
The Tata group firm is in discussion with a few global semiconductor firms, including X-Fab, DNeX and Globetronics among others, the newspaper said.
The development is being led by KC Ang, who was recently appointed as the president and head of Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing, ET said.
Ang comes with over 30 years of experience in foundry industry. Earlier, he served as the president of the Asia arm and chairman of Chinese operations at Global Foundries, where he worked for over 15 years.
The company has plans to invest Rs 91,000 crore in its chip fab unit in Gujarat’s Dholera and another Rs 27,000 crore in Assam’s Morigaon for an OSAT plant, the paper reported.
