Now, devotees can donate by scanning QR codes

After mobile wallets and point of sale machines, Paytm has set up QR codes at places of worship.

Last November's note ban affected the gods too as donations from devotees plummeted. But there was some respite as mobile wallets came to the rescue. Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led Paytm decided to make things easier for devotees through its e-wallets and also by setting up POS (point of sale) machines in many places of worship. Now, the company has offered devotees a faster way to donate.

To make donations instantly, devotees can scan the Paytm QR Codes installed in the premises of temples, mosques and churches.

Earlier this week, Paytm announced that it will invest Rs 600 crore in the next 10 months to develop a QR code-based payments solution.

Paytm’s QR Code-based payment is fast becoming synonymous with mobile payments in India. The company’s zero-cost payment system combined with a large customer base and wide variety of use-cases has made it a viable mode of payment.

Speaking about the development, Kiran Vasireddy, Senior Vice President, Paytm said, “Over the past few months, many places of public worship have started accepting donations through Paytm. This is a part of the rapid shift in overall consumer behavior towards going cashless.”

What is a QR code?

QR code, or Quick Response code, is an arrangement of black and white lines or square blocks that are used to store information such as weblinks or a merchant's bank account details. Such codes can be deciphered or read by a smartphone camera.

Places of worship that have gone digital

Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai, Cathedral Church of The Redemption in Delhi and ISKCON Temple in Indore among others have gone cashless.
