Government says restaurants and hotels can no longer charge service charges from customers. But does the industry agree?

The government last week laid to rest the contentious issue of payment of service charges when it approved guidelines suggesting such charges on restaurant and hotel bills will be discretionary for customers and cannot be made mandatory.

Even as the revised guidelines will be sent to the states for necessary action the restaurants seem to have no intention of following government diktat yet. Customer complain they are unaware of the revised norms.
