Reliance Power today said the first of two units of its 600 MW Butibori thermal power plant in Maharashtra have started generating electricity.

"Reliance Power has synchronised the first of two units of its 600 MW Butibori thermal power project near Nagpur in Maharashtra," the Anil Ambani led group company said in a statement.

Synchronisation of power project means that electricity generation has started from the project and the station has been connected to the national grid, RPower spokesperson said.

RPower has invested Rs 3,600 crore in the Butibori plant.

The project may be fully commissioned before the end of the calender year, RPower said, adding that the entire ash generated by the new plant will be utilised by Reliance Group's own cement plant.

The company has an operating capacity of 1,540 MW from all sources of energy.

"With Butibori our operating capacity goes up to 1,540 MW, the projects under construction are progressing satisfactorily," Reliance Power CEO J P Chalasani said in the statement.

The company also operates 1,200 MW thermal power plant at Rosa in Uttar Pradesh.

Shares of the company were trading at Rs 101.35, up 1.86% on the BSE in the morning trade.
