Makers of defence electronics equipment, Bharat Electronics has bagged a contract worth Rs 2,463 crore from the Ministry of Defence to supply Ashwini Radars for the Indian Air Force, the company said in an exchange filing on March 12.
These indigenous, mobile radars - developed jointly by BEL and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) - are capable of 4D surveillance with advanced features, and can be deployed on all terrains. Ashwini Radars can detect and track aerial targets ranging from fighter aircraft to slow moving targets, said the company in its statement.
With this order win for an Low-level Transportable Radar (LLTR), BEL's orderbook is now worth Rs 17,030 crore for the financial year 2025.
"LLTR (Ashwini) is an active electronically scanned phased array radar based on state-of-the-art solid state technology. The radar is capable of tracking aerial targets from high-speed fighter aircraft to slow moving targets such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and helicopters. Its acquisition will significantly enhance the operational preparedness of the Indian Air Force," government's statement on the radar deal said. The Ministry of Defence called the programme a major step towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The shares of BEL closed in the red with minor losses on March 12, with the announcement coming after market hours.
