The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) picked Bhajanlal Sharma as the new Rajasthan chief minister a day after the party implemented a generational shift in Madhya Pradesh. A first-time lawmaker from Sanganer, Sharma is the state general secretary of the party in the state.
Sharma's name was announced in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other senior party leaders following the party's legislature meeting. Notably, Sharma's name was announced by BJP's Vasundhara Raje, whose name was also among the contenders for the top post.
The CM elect won the recently-concluded elections from the Sanganer assembly seat defeating Congress's Pushpendra Bhardwaj with a margin of 48,081 votes. He had fought as an independent candidate in 2008. Sharma became an MLA for the first time in 2023 and has served as the state general secretary of BJP four times.
Gajendra Shekhawat, Mahant Balaknath, Diya Kumari, Anita Bhadel, Manju Baghmar and Arjun Ram Meghwal, were some other names in the list of contenders for the CM post in Rajasthan.
Besides, Diya Kumari and Premchand Bairwa have been named as Bhajnlal Sharma's two deputies.
