India, the world's biggest wheat consumer and grower after China, banned exports in 2022 and is relying on bumper harvests to bolster stocks and tame local prices that surged after dry weather shrivelled the crop in 2022 and 2023.
Last week, the commerce ministry extended the ban on onion export till further orders. The ban on onion shipment was valid till March 31.
The CCI is the government's nodal agency for the procurement of cotton at a minimum support price (MSP). It undertakes procurement when prices fall below the MSP level. Cotton season runs from October 2023 to September 2024.

The last leg of sowing of wheat, the main rabi (winter) crop, is underway and will continue till next week. Till last week, wheat was planted in 320.54 lakh hectares, as per the official data.

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said these five products — basmati rice, non-basmati rice, sugar, spices, and oil meals — account for 51.5 per cent of India's total agriculture exports.
