For generations, Indian households have relied on home remedies involving kitchen staples like besan, haldi, curd, and coconut oil. But while many of these ingredients have stood the test of time, new-age beauty brands are rediscovering and validating this traditional wisdom with a fresh perspective.
Kitchen wisdom:
The homemade beauty remedies aren’t just relics of old-school DIY skincare but are simple, effective, and backed by both tradition and science. At a time when the beauty market is flooded with serums, peels, and complex 10-step routines, a return to fuss-free, food-based beauty offers a refreshing change. Swagatika Das, Co-founder of Nat Habit, believes that our kitchens hold the most underrated beauty secrets. She explains, “We believe that the freshest beauty solutions often come straight from your kitchen. Ingredients like besan (gram flour) and curd are age-old favourites that continue to work wonders. Besan acts as a natural cleanser and gentle exfoliator, helping to remove tan and dead skin without stripping away moisture. Curd, rich in probiotics and lactic acid, nourishes and brightens skin while keeping it soft and supple,” she explains.

The beauty expert also encourages looking beyond the obvious choices. The simple and unexplored ingredients are the foundation of many of the brand’s fresh-made ubtans and masks for hair and skin. Das says, “There are so many interesting ingredients like karela, turmeric, clove, raw milk and much more with their benefits proven for food but still unexplored for skin and hair. Karela is a great detoxifier not only for the gut but for skin too. Turmeric is great in not only strengthening your immunity but strengthening youthful glow in deep dermal layers as well. Clove is not only for teas but also to clarify skin and keep acne away.”
Go natural:
It’s not just about mixing a few ingredients together but creating a lifestyle that respects your skin’s natural rhythm. Weekly rituals, consistency, and choosing real over synthetic go a long way in ensuring healthier skin and stronger hair. “We advocate for skincare that is as close to its natural state as possible because the skin recognises and responds best to what is real. Keeping up with natural beauty does not have to be complicated; it is all about consistency and choosing fresh, real ingredients. Weekly oil massages using cold-pressed oils, like coconut oil or castor oil, can do wonders for hair strength and shine. Similarly, using fresh masks or ubtans a few times a week instead of synthetic face washes helps maintain the skin’s natural balance,” says Das.

In a world obsessed with overnight results, this approach is slower, gentler, and more sustainable. Natural remedies are gentler, safer, and free from harsh chemicals that can cause long-term damage. While chemical-based products may offer quick fixes, they often mask the problem instead of addressing the root cause. Instead of searching for a miracle cream, pause and explore your kitchen. Fresh, natural products support your skin and hair’s natural healing processes, making beauty not just about how you look, but how you feel in your skin.
