Microshifting trend: Is Gen Z rewriting work life rules for good?

Microshifting is a workplace trend where professionals, especially the young ones, are demanding more flexibility and autonomy to manage their tasks during the day. Instead of working in a shift, they are demanding that they complete their tasks as and when they deem fit. Will this trend float or sink?

Friend A (Lawyer by profession): I am sick and tired of working for long hours. That too in office. I feel like quitting.
Friend B (Writer by profession): You earn so handsomely! You've studied so much to reach where you are today.
Friend A: I agree. These monthly payouts have always baited me to climb the corporate ladder, but no more! I feel I am always running against time. So much time gets wasted in commute and other frivolous things in office. I really long for a working model where I can be more in-charge of my time.
Friend B: I don't mean to make you feel more bad about your situation, but sometimes, I feel that even though my pay is nothing in comparison to you, I lead a balanced life. I write from different corners of the world, I lead a more wholesome life. Plus, I take so many breaks within a day, as and when I want, which in turn increases my productivity.
Friend A: Yeah! I see that and that's why I am also thinking to take the easier route. Maybe provide consulting services and ditch this so-called high-paying, but blood-sucking job where I feel I am under surveillance every hour that I spend in office.

Many of you may have resonated with friend A here and some of you (probably the lucky ones) are leading the good life like friend B. The reality is that a lot of people out there find themselves in similar situation like friend A. They have it all, and yet they feel they are always running against time and missing out on things. This explains why a new trend is emerging and it is called 'microshifting'.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit us some years back, it led to a rise in remote culture and we all hailed it. That was the time when so many stories of people working from different corners of the world were coming out, inspiring so many of us. So many of us were able to lead more wholesome lives without missing out much on family celebrations and outings with friends, simply because the remote model provided us with some degree of autonomy.

Microshifting trend is taking things a step ahead, as more and more professionals out there now prefer to work as per their own timeline through the day. Whether it be squeezing time for a quick nap, needing time to run some essential errands, or simply watching few episodes of a show they like, they want to be able to do all of that during the day. It doesn't mean professionals want their work to suffer, or not be serious about meeting professional goals. All they are saying is they don't want to work at stretch and work as and when they deem fit. They believe is boosts their productivity, sense of well-being and promotes work-life balance.

A lot of veterans will probably roll their eyes in disbelief and disgust after hearing about this concept. They will probably throw labels also like today's generation doesn't want to work only. However, come to think of it, if professionals are able to give the desired output, or probably more than that, when they work in micro shifts, then what is the harm really?

Forbes reported that as per a survey 'Deputy’s The Big Shift: US 2025', it was seen that microshifting is gaining popularity in service industries, particularly among Gen Z employees who are embracing shorter shifts to balance caregiving, education or multiple jobs.

Wondering what is prompting young professionals to demand more and more flexibility? Well, it could be because they want to do it all and they see no good reason to compromise on their health, fitness, sleep, family and social life for work alone. They are questioning the norms, challenging the status quo and pushing the envelope wanting for more. Are you too with them on this?
