Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can range from mild to severe and can lead to complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions, says Dr Minal Medha, a Lucknow-based paediatrician.
Symptoms of influenzaRecognising the symptoms of influenza is important for early diagnosis and treatment. Common symptoms include fever and chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. In some cases, influenza can lead to complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus infections, particularly in high-risk groups.
Why is influenza more common during the rainy season?Increased humidity and moisture: The rainy season often brings higher humidity levels, which can create a more favourable environment for the influenza virus to thrive, says Dr Medha. Moist conditions can also contribute to the proliferation of germs and bacteria.
Crowded indoor spaces: Rainy weather often drives people indoors, leading to increased close contact and crowded conditions in homes, schools, offices, and public transport. This close proximity facilitates the spread of the influenza virus from person to person.
Weakened immune response: The rainy season can also be associated with changes in lifestyle and diet that might affect immune function. Reduced exposure to sunlight can lead to lower levels of vitamin D, which plays an important role in boosting immunity.
Increased respiratory infections: Rainy weather can coincide with other respiratory infections, which may weaken the respiratory system and increase susceptibility to influenza.
How to avoid influenza during the rainy season?VaccinationGet vaccinated: The annual flu vaccine is the most effective way to protect against influenza. It helps your body build immunity to the strains of the virus that are expected to be prevalent during the flu season.
Practice good hygieneHand washing: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water, especially after being in crowded places or touching surfaces that may be contaminated.
Hand sanitiser: Use alcohol-based hand sanitisers when soap and water are not available.
Avoid close contactStay away from sick individuals: Avoid close contact with people who show symptoms of influenza or other respiratory illnesses.
Maintain distance: Practice social distancing where possible, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.
Enhance immune functionHealthy diet: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support immune health.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and support overall health.
Regular exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to boost your immune system.
Keep your environment cleanDisinfect surfaces: Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, light switches, and electronic devices.
Ventilation: Ensure that indoor spaces are well-ventilated to reduce the concentration of airborne viruses.
Stay informedMonitor flu trends: Stay updated on local flu activity and follow any recommendations or advisories from health authorities.
