The Indian entertainment industry mourns the loss of Dheeraj Kumar, a distinguished actor, producer, and director. He passed away earlier today at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at the age of 79.
Dheeraj began his acting journey in 1970 as the hero in Raaton Ka Raja. Over the next decade, he shared the screen with Bollywood icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand, and Manoj Kumar in memorable films such as Sargam, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Swami, Heera Panna, and Beharoopia. He also made a mark in Punjabi cinema, and starred in over 21 films between 1970 and 1984 before transitioning behind the camera.
In 1986, Dheeraj founded Creative Eye Ltd, with which he cemented his legacy as a television trailblazer. The company produced iconic mythological hits like Om Namah Shivay, Shree Ganesh, and Jai Santoshi Maa, as well as family dramas such as Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyan, Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam, and Ishq Subhan Allah.
Creative Eye’s diverse content, ranging from devotional series to romantic sagas, became household staples, and resonated with audiences across generations.
From a young actor breaking through in Bollywood and Punjabi cinema to a television producer who shaped Indian myths and family dramas, Dheeraj Kumar's legacy is rich and multi-faceted.
Earlier this week, Dheeraj was hospitalised with pneumonia and placed on a ventilator in the ICU. His condition deteriorated, and he suffered a cardiac arrest. He passed away at 11:40 am, with family by his side.

His funeral rites will be held on 16 July at the Pawan Hans cremation ground in Vile Parle West.
Despite his stellar career, Dheeraj remained humble and deeply spiritual. He was known to have visited the ISKCON Temple in Kharghar shortly before falling ill.
His death has elicited an outpouring of grief across the film and television world. His passing has left a huge void in the industry.
