Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt had shed light on his struggle with drug addiction, recounting his journey and the life-altering realizations that led him to recovery in his past interview. The actor, known for his on-screen charisma and larger-than-life persona, shared personal anecdotes that highlighted the devastating impact of substance abuse on his life.

Sanjay' battle with drugs began at a young age, during a turbulent period in his family life. His mother was battling cancer, and he was working on his debut film, Rocky. Reflecting on those early years, he admitted how deeply addiction had taken hold of him.

When Sanjay travelled with 1 kg heroin on flight

“I was already on drugs when my mother was being treated for cancer. Rocky (his debut film) was being made, and I remember that I was so addicted that once I traveled with 1 kg of heroin hidden in my shoes. My two sisters were also with me on the same flight. At that time, checking at airports was not so strict. Today, when I think about the incident, I get scared. I didn’t worry about getting caught, but what about my sisters? Drugs do this to you. You don’t care about family or anything else.”

Wake up call of his life

Sanjay went on to describe the moment that served as his wake-up call. It was a harrowing experience that forced him to confront the toll addiction had taken on his body and mind.

“One day, I came home high, had alcohol, and went to sleep. When I woke up, I asked the house help to get me something to eat, and he told me that I had been asleep for two days! I looked at myself in the mirror and felt I was 100% about to die. That was when I asked my father for help.”

This moment of self-awareness, triggered by the concern of his servant and his own shocking reflection, marked the beginning of a long and challenging journey to recovery.

Why Sanjay started taking drugs?

When asked why he started doing drugs in the first place, Sanjay offered a surprising explanation: “Because I had difficulty talking to girls.”

“Somebody told me that if you try this, you will be able to talk to women, so I tried it, and it worked. What I want to tell youngsters today is that I have gone through a lot because of substance abuse. It is better to be high on life than on any substance. Do good work and get appreciated; there is no better high than that in life.”

In the later years of his career, Sanjay's life and struggles became the subject of a biopic directed by Rajkumar Hirani. When asked about Ranbir Kapoor, who portrayed him in the film, Sanjay shared mixed feelings.

“I was flattered that someone of Hirani’s caliber was interested in making a film on his life. But I can’t spend more than half an hour with anybody. I have been trying to avoid him; it is a difficult role for him to play. He is a fine actor, though.”
