Jackie Shroff, one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars since the 1980s, has always been rooted in his humble beginnings. Despite achieving fame and stardom early in his career, Jackie never distanced himself from the chawl in Mumbai’s Teen Batti area where he grew up. In a heartfelt interview on Yaaron Ki Baarat show, the actor reflected on the simplicity of his life even after success had come knocking on his door.

“I got this film, I didn’t have a cupboard. Cupboard came later, first the suit came,” he said with a smile, reminiscing about his early days. “And when the cupboard came, the entire chawl had assembled to see the cupboard. It was that kind of place and time. I learnt the value of things there.”

Jackie’s story is not just about stardom but also about the strong sense of community in chawls. In a time when many would have moved into posh apartments, Jackie chose to stay among those who had seen him grow up. Even after delivering hits like Hero, Andar Baahar, and Yudh, Jackie stayed in the chawl, where daily life included standing in line for the toilet.

“There were 30 people and three washrooms, kabhi kabhi producers mujhe line mein Toilet ke dikh jate the. Toh wo jaate time line mein mujhe narration films ke bhi dete the.” Jackie recalled. “After I became an actor, producers and directors would come to meet me in that chawl. Whenever they had to use the washroom, they had to stand in line. The chawl people didn’t like it. So they told me, ‘You have become such a star. We don’t like it when you or your friends stand in queue to use the washroom. We are gifting you the washroom."

This gesture of gifting Jackie a private washroom shows how deeply his neighbors cared for him. Jackie tried to decline the offer, saying he and his guests had no problem standing in line, but the residents insisted. “I told them I didn’t need it and my friends didn’t have an issue standing in queue. But, they insisted. The washroom used to have a lock on it,” he said.

Interestingly, even during this time, Jackie was already a recognized face. “I remember my mom had put up the poster of Shiva Ka Insaaf,” he mentioned, referring to one of his early films that followed the massive success of Swami Dada and Hero.
