Vijay announces retirement from films

Actor Vijay, one of the leading stars in Tamil cinema, has officially confirmed that he plans to retire from acting after his 69th film, Jana Nayagan.

As per an HT report, the actor revealed his intentions during the first-anniversary meeting of his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), held in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu.

At the gathering, Vijay addressed his critics, clarifying that while he is deeply passionate about his acting career, his commitment to politics has now taken precedence. He stated that Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, will be his final film.

"This will be my 69th and final film. I want to dedicate myself fully to politics and work towards the welfare of the people," he said. His words put an end to rumours that he might return to films post-elections.

Vijay’s announcement has put to rest the speculation about his future in films, clearing the air regarding his exit from acting.

In 2024, Vijay launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam with the intention of contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The actor-politician had already begun to lay the foundation for his political career, holding his first conference in October of the same year to outline his political ideologies.

The formation of TVK reflected Vijay’s deep commitment to societal change, with the actor focusing on the betterment of the state and its citizens.

Vijay's 69th film, Jana Nayagan, has garnered significant attention, especially after the release of its first look in January.

The actor's look, wielding a whip, drew comparisons to the iconic late actor and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran, who also made a mark in politics. The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, among others, and has created buzz, with some speculating it could be a remake of the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari.

Vijay’s decision to step away from acting is a significant moment for his fans and the industry, as he transitions to a new chapter of public service and political engagement.
