Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal has officially stepped onto a global stage. The actor has begun filming in Australia for his Hollywood debut in Street Fighter, taking on the role of the legendary fire-spitting yogi Dhalsim. For fans who grew up smashing arcade buttons, this is big.
The casting of Jammwal as Dhalsim was first reported back in July and instantly sparked chatter online. The character, introduced in Street Fighter II in 1991, has always been a fan-favourite, the stretchy-limbed, flame-breathing warrior rooted in yoga. For many, Jammwal feels like a natural fit. His years of training in Kalaripayattu, his lean martial artist’s frame, and his reputation from films like Commando and Khuda Haafiz make him almost tailor-made for the part.
“This isn’t just about an Indian actor landing a Hollywood role,” one trade source put it. “It’s about authenticity in casting.” Fair point. Too often, global action films recycle the same faces. Jammwal, by contrast, brings something raw and rooted in Indian martial heritage.
The reboot, produced by Legendary Entertainment, is helmed by director Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) with a screenplay from Dalan Musson (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). It’s shaping up to be a true ensemble affair. Alongside Jammwal, the cast includes Noah Centineo as Ken, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Jason Momoa as Blanka, WWE’s Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and even Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog. Talk about an eclectic mix.

Vidyut himself hinted at the big moment with a short Instagram Story, simply captioned: “It begins.” Fans didn’t need more. Social media lit up within hours, with Street Fighter hashtags trending in both India and the U.S.
For Vidyut, this is more than a role. It’s a chance to redefine how Indian talent gets represented in Hollywood blockbusters.
