National pride, and cinematic legacy, veteran actor Ashok Saraf was honoured mid-flight by none other than his niece, Captain Aditi Paranjpe, shortly after receiving India’s prestigious Padma Shri award. The emotional tribute unfolded onboard a Delhi-Mumbai flight on May 30, 2025, just three days after Saraf was conferred with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Saraf, a legendary name in both Marathi and Hindi cinema, was travelling with his wife, actress Nivedita Saraf, unaware of the surprise awaiting him thousands of feet above ground.

The flight’s captain, Aditi Paranjpe, who is also Nivedita Saraf’s niece, paused the routine flight announcements to deliver a special message to the passengers, acknowledging the presence of her beloved uncle onboard.

“Hello everyone! I’m your flight captain, Aditi Paranjpe. A very warm welcome aboard this flight from Delhi to Mumbai. Today’s journey holds a very special place in my heart because my uncle, Ashok Saraf, is flying with us. He has recently been awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding contributions. It’s a moment of immense pride for me to fly alongside him. I request all of you to give him a huge round of applause in celebration. This flight is truly special and emotional for me.”

The announcement moved passengers and crew alike, sparking applause across the cabin. The heartfelt moment, captured in a video, quickly went viral online and resonated with fans across the country. For Saraf, this was more than a simple recognition—it was a celebration of decades of artistic excellence, shared with the very people closest to him.

For Ashok Saraf, whose career spans several decades and includes iconic roles in films and television, this moment marked a culmination of years of dedication to the craft of acting. From slapstick comedy to intense drama, Saraf has entertained millions and carved a permanent space in Indian cinema. The in-flight tribute—a deeply personal gesture from a proud niece—symbolized not only familial love but also the nation’s collective respect for an artist who has given so much to the world of entertainment.

Nivedita Saraf, his wife, looked on with pride during the announcement. The couple, visibly moved, shared the emotional flight in quiet joy, surrounded by passengers who joined the celebration mid-air. The occasion was not just about the Padma Shri but about how legacy, love, and respect can intersect in the most beautiful ways—even on a commercial flight.
