Mahhi Vij talks about portraying the role of a mother

Colors’ newest drama Seher Hone Ko Hai is a heartfelt story of courage, love, and the everyday struggles that mothers and daughters go through.

Leading this emotional narrative is Mahhi Vij, returning to fiction nearly a decade after stepping away from television.

Joining her is debutant Rishita Kothari, whose innocence and freshness perfectly complement the intensity of the story.

What has made the experience even more meaningful for Mahhi is the unexpected, almost instinctive connection she has formed with Rishita.

Speaking about their relationship, Mahhi shared with a smile, “I have become her mother off-screen too. I am always fussing over her, asking if she has eaten, if she needs anything, if she’s tired.”

In fact, the connection runs so deep that Mahhi often jokes with the young actress. Mahhi told IANS, “I keep telling her she should tell her mom to disown her because I am ready to adopt her! That’s the kind of bond we have developed.”

For Mahhi, watching Rishita navigate her first show has awakened her own maternal instincts. “She’s such a sweet, calm energy on set, and because this is her debut, I automatically feel protective of her, the way you do for your own child who’s stepping into a big new world. We have a lot of fun together, but we also learn from each other."

“She teaches me her little Gen-Z things, and I guide her where I can. It’s a very natural, pure bond, nothing forced and it genuinely feels like family,” Mahhi added warmly.

When asked how she prepared for the role of Kausar, a mother who fights for her daughter, Mahhi said she didn’t depend on detailed rehearsals or character analysis.

“For me, the mother-daughter bond in this show didn’t need heavy preparation; it needed honesty," she shared. “I am a mother in real life, so I instantly connected with Kausar’s instinct to protect her child from everything she herself has suffered."

But Mahhi explains that the challenge lay in exploring the quieter, more fragile parts of Kausar’s emotional world. “What I focused on instead was understanding the quieter, internal parts of Kausar, the exhaustion of fighting the same battles again, the guilt of not being able to give her daughter more, and the tiny moments of strength she gathers just to push through one more day. I didn’t prepare to ‘act’ like a mother; I just felt it."

Set in the culturally rich lanes of Lucknow, Seher Hone Ko Hai follows Kausar’s relentless journey to give her sixteen-year-old daughter, Seher, the opportunities she was denied—standing firm against a patriarchal society that includes opposition from her own husband.

The show also features actor Parth Samthaan and promises powerful performances wrapped in emotional truth.
